Embracing Diversity and Inclusion: A Paralegal’s Journey to Software Development
Hey there, I’m Teila, and I’m embarking on a thrilling journey from paralegal to software developer. After over a decade in the legal field, I’ve decided to pivot towards a career that promises boundless opportunities for growth and learning. The decision came when I realized the limitations of my current role and started noticing areas for improvement within the software we utilize daily. The process of software development fascinated me, particularly the decisions made to meet the needs of end-users. With a mindset of dreaming big, setting goals, and taking action, I’m ready to share the highs and lows of this transition with you.
Dreaming Big: I firmly believe that no dream is too grand. Despite lacking a technical background, I am confident in my ability to learn new skills. Feeling stuck in a career rut is no longer an option for me, and I refuse to limit my potential.
Setting Goals: Goal-setting is essential for progress. My first goal is to get registered and fully prepared for this journey. Next, I aim to complete the program at Digital Crafts in Atlanta, GA, by September 2014. By November 2014, I plan to start applying for positions in my new career field.
Taking Action: I’ve taken decisive steps towards my goal by enrolling in a full-stack development boot camp at Digital Crafts in Atlanta, GA. Being accepted into the program marks the beginning of an exciting chapter in my professional life.
Transitioning Soft Skills: Transitioning from a paralegal to a software developer requires more than just technical knowledge. Soft skills, honed over years of legal practice, such as attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective communication, are invaluable assets in the tech industry. Moreover, my experience navigating complex legal issues has equipped me with problem-solving abilities that are transferable to the world of software development.
Embracing Diversity and Inclusion: As I transition into the tech industry, I am committed to promoting diversity and inclusion. The tech sector has historically struggled with representation, particularly concerning gender and racial diversity. As a woman of color entering this field, I recognize the importance of creating an inclusive environment where individuals from all backgrounds feel valued and empowered. By championing diversity and inclusion initiatives, I hope to contribute to a more equitable and innovative tech community.
As I navigate this uncharted territory, I want to provide relatable insights for individuals transitioning from different industries into tech. My journey from law to software development exemplifies that it’s never too late to pursue your passion and reinvent yourself professionally.
So, if you’re contemplating a career change, I encourage you to embrace the unfamiliar and challenge yourself daily. Dream big, set achievable goals, and take decisive action toward the career of your dreams. Remember, you’re never too old to pivot and pursue your true calling.
